Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander cosponsored the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act, legislation to block the extreme and unprecedented cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid in the Republican budget. Goodlander also signed a discharge petition to force an up-or-down vote on this legislation in the House to protect Medicaid and food assistance from devastating budget cuts.
“Protecting Medicaid is a matter of life or death for tens of thousands of people across New Hampshire,” said Congresswoman Goodlander. “The same is true for SNAP. That’s why I’m proud to help lead this legislation and why I am working to expedite a vote on it in the House as soon as possible. This cannot wait.”
Across New Hampshire, the Republican budget puts critical support for our communities on the chopping block:
- More than 183,000 people across New Hampshire rely on Medicaid and are at risk of losing their health care under Republican budget plans.
- This includes 89,195 children under the age of 19 and 20,000 seniors over 65.
- More than 77,000 people across New Hampshire rely on SNAP food benefits to put food on the table and make ends meet.

Since taking the oath of office, Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander has met with hundreds of Granite Staters across New Hampshire and heard directly from health care workers, veterans, seniors, child care workers, and more about the devastating impact that cuts to Medicaid, nutrition assistance, and more would have on our state.
Background: A discharge petition forces an up-or-down vote on pending legislation that House Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to consider. Once a majority of the House, or 218 voting members, sign this discharge petition, the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act must be considered in the House immediately.
