CONCORD, NH. (WCAX) – New Hampshire Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander has signed onto a bill aimed at curbing executive power around tariffs.
The Trump administration has slapped tariffs on many countries around the world, including hefty levies on products coming from China.
While he has paused or delayed many tariffs, Goodlander questions whether tariffs are within his authority at all. She says the bill would restore power to Congress where it belongs.
“The only sense I can make out of it is — we have a president who is picking winners and losers. Who is exempting the people he decides should be exempted from these painful tariffs, and he is leaving it to hard-working people to feel the pain,” Goodlander said.
Goodlander says the tariffs, along with sharp cuts to programs like Medicaid and Social Security, are all designed to pay for tax cuts for the top 1 percent. The administration says the tariffs are designed to level the playing field and stop countries from “ripping off” the United States.
