**New Hampshire is considered to be within the Appalachian “flash flood hotspot” region, with flooding representing one of the top natural hazards in the state**
Concord, N.H. — Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander is cosponsoring H.R. 1076, the Weather Alert, Response and Notification (WARN) Act, bipartisan legislation to modernize emergency alert systems nationwide. As communities across New Hampshire are experiencing more extreme weather events, it has never been more important for our local alert systems to be reliable. This legislation delivers for our communities by taking steps to modernize, strengthen, and update this critical infrastructure. Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) is an original co-sponsor of this legislation.
“I have no higher responsibility than protecting the safety and security of Granite Staters,” said Congresswoman Goodlander. “As we’ve seen time and time again, serious harm can happen when people are not notified about severe weather before it’s too late. This commonsense, bipartisan legislation will help us identify and fix gaps to ensure that New Hampshire has a reliable notification system during emergencies. It will help save lives and prevent the next tragedy before it happens.”
Specifically, the Weather Alert, Response and Notification (WARN) Act protects our communities from extreme weather by:
- Commissioning a study to evaluate the efficacy of current alert systems and investigate new platforms for weather alerts that account for advances in technology.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of disseminating unique, life-saving alerts during severe weather, including travel bans and area-specific power outages.
Congresswoman Goodlander, a member of the House Democrats’ National Security Task Force, has dedicated her life to delivering for the people of New Hampshire and keeping our communities safe. Before taking the oath to represent New Hampshire in the People’s House, Congresswoman Goodlander served as an intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve for over a decade.
