Seacoast Online: Federal help sought in Memorial Bridge collapse risk assessment

PORTSMOUTH — New Hampshire’s congressional delegation is asking a federal agency to assist the state in assessing the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth for risk of collapse due to a vessel strike, a study that will soon go out to bid.

U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and U.S. Representatives Chris Pappas and Maggie Goodlander, all Democrats, called upon the Federal Highway Administration to tag team the bridge’s review with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation in a letter Monday.

The four-member delegation’s message was sent after the National Transportation Safety Board in March named the Memorial Bridge as one of 68 bridges across the U.S. that could collapse if hit by a vessel.
