WASHINGTON (WCAX) – Disabled veterans are closer to safer and easier ways to get around.
New Hampshire Rep. Maggie Goodlander led the Automotive Support Services to Improve Safe Transportation, or ASSIST Act.
Goodlander says the VA is limited in offering financial help to modify veterans’ cars for safe travel.
She says the ASSIST bill would close that gap, letting the VA fund adaptive equipment beyond the limited list they currently use.
“We have a sacred obligation to ensure that our veterans have the support they need to thrive and enjoy the freedoms they fought for while serving our country in uniform,” said Goodlander, D-New Hampshire.
It’s a sentiment echoed by New Hampshire veterans.
“Anything Congress can do to cut red tape and help veterans like me and my family access support from the VA quicker, the better. We need fewer hoops to jump through and more direct support, as getting around to doctors and such can’t be put off,” said Gary Gordon, a Vietnam Veteran from Concord, New Hampshire.
The act passed the House of Representatives on Monday. Goodlander urged the Senate to take up the bill and pass it.
