Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander met with Education Secretary Linda McMahon in response to her request for answers to urgent questions about the impact that President Trump’s executive order to dismantle the United States Department of Education will have on New Hampshire. During the meeting, Congresswoman Goodlander pressed:
“Public education is the lifeblood and ultimate safeguard of American democracy. There is no higher purpose for federal funding than supporting New Hampshire’s students, and there is no greater threat to the future of our students than the Trump Administration’s assault on public education,” said Congresswoman Goodlander. “While I appreciate that Secretary McMahon made herself available to hear directly from me and my colleagues today, I was deeply disappointed with her answers to my questions about the impact that the effort she is leading to dismantle the United States Department of Education will have on our students and schools across New Hampshire. The fight to protect the federal programs that New Hampshire students rely on and the federal dollars promised to our state is far from over, and I’ll never give up.”
The Department of Education directs key programs and resources for New Hampshire schools, including:
- $51.2 million in 2024 from Title I, a program designed to support schools with low-income students to bridge achievement gaps.
- $61.7 million in 2024 in Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) funds, which support special education services.
- In 2024, New Hampshire had 58,917 Pell Grant recipients.
Congresswoman Goodlander is a fierce fighter for New Hampshire students and educators. She is a member of the House Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group, supporting litigation to protect and defend Granite Staters from the onslaught of unlawful Trump Administration executive actions. The Trump Administration is facing multiple lawsuits against their efforts to dismantle the Department of Education, including State of New York v. McMahon, Carter v. Department of Education, and Somerville Public Schools v. Trump.
