Goodlander Highlights Impact of GOP Cuts to Nutrition Assistance, SNAP At Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter

Nashua, N.H. – Today, Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander met with local experts and food insecurity advocates to discuss their important work and the devastating impact that the Republican budget bill – which makes the biggest cuts to nutrition assistance in American history – would have on their operations and New Hampshire families.

1 in 9 people in New Hampshire face hunger, and 77,000 Granite Staters rely on SNAP. Last month, Congresswoman Goodlander voted against the Republicans’ budget bill that would cut SNAP by nearly $300 billion and require states, including New Hampshire, to share SNAP benefit costs, which are currently 100% federally funded and not allocated for in state budgets, starting in 2028.

“Congress should be doing everything in our power to help lift families up, lower costs, and expand access to food assistance. Instead, Republicans are pushing for the biggest cuts to nutrition assistance in American history to pay for trillions of dollars in tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations,” said Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander. “Today, I heard firsthand from the folks on the frontlines of the food insecurity crisis here in New Hampshire. Their stories make it clear: cuts to SNAP and barriers to access nutrition assistance will hurt Granite Staters. I will continue using every tool that I have to prevent these cuts and deliver for our communities.”

“At the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter we are already seeing more families and individuals coming to us for food boxes and hot meals,” said Jane L. Goodman, Executive Director of the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter, Inc. “SNAP cuts will only drive that demand higher—at a time when we’re already struggling to keep our pantry shelves full. SNAP isn’t just a government program—it’s a lifeline. Reducing benefits will deepen hunger and overwhelm food pantries like ours that are working every day to meet growing needs.”

During the visit, Congresswoman Goodlander met with: Jane Goodman, Executive Director, Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter; Elsy Cipriani, Executive Director, NH Food Pantry; Justin Munroe, Founder, Grow Nashua; Pastor Mark Perkins, Program Director, Southern NH Rescue Mission; Stacie Merrifield, Culinary and Nutrition Programs Director, NH Food Bank; Jilian Murphy, Multimedia Coordinator, NH Food Bank; and Alyssa McKinney, Agency Relations Coordinator: Hillsborough County, NH Food Bank.

Congresswoman Goodlander has dedicated her life to fighting for a fair deal, including building a tax system that delivers tax breaks for working families, not handouts to billionaires and big corporations. She is a proud cosponsor of the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act, which would protect families by prohibiting Republicans from weaponizing the reconciliation process to cut benefits or remove individuals from Medicaid and SNAP.
